Photo reblogged from the poor dancing girl she won't dance again with 149 notes
I’ve argued with people on Tumblr about how Andie should’ve picked Duckie instead of Blaine, but I feel REALLY STRONGLY THAT THIS IS TRUE. Even J. Hughes said so. He said he wrote Andie choosing Blaine, though, in order to show that money and social status doesn’t matter.
One day I’ll have to buy a “I would have picked Duckie” hoodie.

The original ending to this film depicted Duckie getting the girl. However, the test audiences said they would have preferred to see Blane win Andie’s heart. Additionally, Molly Ringwald was sick during the filming of the ending and John Hughes wasn’t satisfied with the editing. He was also concerned that audiences would take the original ending as a message that poor people and rich people don’t belong together.
IT. WOULD. NOT. HAVE. WORKED.
look at the goddamned film. Andie was in love with Blaine, not Duckie. Her dad even told Duckie what would happen if he got in a relationship wherein only one party was in love. The film ended organically and if it had ended any other way it wouldn’t be the solid, perfect film that it is.
audiences may like Duckie more, but audiences aren’t THE CHARACTERS. Andie is the character. ANDIE. not you. NOT YOU.
i love you even more for this
Erin and I have been arguing on the pro-Blaine ending (not to be confused with anti-Duckie, I love Duckie, just not for Andie) for a long time. and I fear we will have to continue for a long long time. p.s. this is my 3rd favorite film of all time, so I get a little defensive.
YES. ALSO. I think that Blaine is like Mr. Bingley - he was led astray by his stupid, classist friends, and then he felt like crap about it, so he fixed it and made the right choice. And we all love Mr. Bingley, but for some reason, Blaine doesn’t deserve to get the girl?
Anyway, Duckie had idolized Andie for way too long - even if they did get together, his expectations would be so far beyond hers, because he’d spent his entire adolescence wanting her. I don’t think that disconnect would bode well for a relationship. I mean, maybe Andie and Blaine wouldn’t end up working out either, but people want to see themselves with Duckie, so they ignore the fact that he was kind of obnoxious to Andie sometimes in the singlemindedness of his pursuit, and they just assume that everything would have been perfect between the two of them.
Let me be clear - I adore Duckie. I just see why Andie, while she is/should be appreciative of his loyalty and friendship, doesn’t see him as a romantic prospect.
just reblogging for Erin’s addition to the arguement
